Aromatherapy and Acne

Aromatherapy and Acne:

Yes, acne can be a big nuisance. Nobody likes being seen in public with a disfigured face. But do you know that this problem can have a nice, fragrant solution? No? Yes, it is a fact that aromatherapy is an effective means of treating acne.

For a long time, people have known the healing effects of aromatherapy in treating acne. Aromatherapy involves using oils derived from parts of plants to heal various maladies. These oils are known as essential oils. The most effective acne treatment involves using the tea tree essential oil.

A study was published by the Medical Journal of Australia 1990, in which tea tree essential oil and benzoyl peroxide were compared. 124 participants were administered a 5% tea tree oil gel or 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion. Both the treatments were proved to be effective in treating acne outbreaks and blemishes. However those participants who were administered tea tree oil had lower instances of side effects than those who were administered benzoyl peroxide lotion, though tea tree oil took longer to yield result than benzoyl peroxide. But remember whatever acne treatment you use, whether prescription drugs or aromatherapy treatments, they take their own time to initiate healing.

But tea tree oil is not the only one essential oil that can be used in treating acne. Other essential oils like lavender have anecdotally found to be effective in treating acne.

Many aromatherapy remedies have been proved to prevent growth of certain strains of bacteria, believed to cause acne. Some of these essential oils contain farnesol, a chemical compound that prevents growth of one type of bacteria. Essential oils that inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria are:

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale) essential oil

Lavender (Lavendula agustifolia) essential oil

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) essential oil

Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini) essential oil

Sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oil

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil
